Te Mata Big Redwoods Burst

The Big Redwoods Track in Te Mata Park near Havelock North leads to a grove of 223 California redwoods that were planted close to a century ago. They are now over 40 metres tall, but can get over 100 metres. I walked here after shooting a foggy sunrise at Te Mata Peak aiming for a more intimate shot. As the sun was rising, it created some interesting effects in the forest.

Tawhai Falls

Tawhai Falls is 13-meter high waterfall located in Tongariro National Park, along the way to Whakapapa Village. The falls, which plunge down from the edge of an ancient lava flow is perhaps better known as Gollum's Pool as Gollum was fishing here in the Lord of the Rings movie.

Lower Tama Lake and Mount Ruapehu

The Lower Tama Lake is located at 1,240 metres and is being fed by a river bringing in eroded ash and other volcanic debris from the surrounding area.

Climb towards Mt. Ngauruhoe

One of the many breathtaking views while climbing up towards the upper Tama Lake viewpoint. Amazing that plants like Hebe are able to grow in this harsh alpine climate.

Te Ana Falls

Te Ana Falls is a plunge waterfall in the beautiful Tangoio Scenic Reserve, just 27 km north of Napier, Hawke’s Bay. The 40-minute walk towards it follows the Kareaara stream through native forest and ends in a cove where the water falls about 10 meters in a shallow secluded pool deep enough for a soak (not in winter though!) or just to chill out.

Pekapeka Boardwalk

A 'traditional' shot of the Pekapeka Wetlands featuring the boardwalk that leads through the swamp. The winter season has quite an impact on the colours on display at this park; the reeds that are green in summer turn light brown in winter, while the lower temperatures and higher rainfall enable the colour of the surrounding hills to revert to a vibrant green again.

Herbertville Beach Rock

Sedimentary rock exposed on a cloud covered stretch of sandy beach at Herbertville.

Cloud Reflections

The brown-coloured beach at Herbertville has wide sand flats with a gentle wave movement on the low-gradient slopes. The large shallow seawater areas it thus creates, reflect the clouds above which provides for fascinating photographs.

Okere Falls

This is one of the beautiful waterfalls you come across while walking along the Okere Falls Track near Rotorua. This stretch of the Kaituna River is heavily used for white water rafting and kayaking, and the view I had standing here was interrupted regularly by rafts with adrenaline junkies coming down the waterfall.

Bridal Veil Falls (middle viewpoint)

As you are walking down the many steps to the bottom of the Bridal Veil Falls, the middle viewpoint is a welcome stop to have a look at the surrounding lush greenery. There are many ferns, nikau palms and other palm and native trees to see from here, and they create a three-dimensional effect with the waterfall being the focal point. The reason for the English name of the falls also becomes obvious, because the stream of water does resemble the veil of a bride.
