Sandfly Bay, Otago Peninsula

Sandfly Bay is located on the southern side of Otago Peninsula about 15km of central Dunedin. Sheltered by surrounding headlands and coastal rock formations, this bay provides magnificent views of large sand dunes that descend onto a wide beach. We saw several sea lions here that were resting on the beach and in the dunes.

A peak at the fog

Peak Hour

Sometimes persistence pays off. I had been going up Te Mata Peak for a number of weeks with this shot in mind. But whenever I went, the sunset was never that great and the shot turned out quite average. Finally, a few weeks ago I got what I was hoping for; a fantastic sunset. Luckily, I wasn't the only one wanting to admire the sunset from the peak, so it was quite busy with cars going up and down the narrow road. Ideal for light trails. This photo is a blend of shots taken within a 20 minute time span. The scenery with Mount Erin in the background is a panorama that combines a series of bracketed shots to capture the dynamic range. The light trails were captured last using a 20 second long exposure to capture vehicles driving from the bottom of the frame to the top.

Alpine Flora and Mount Ngauruhoe

The alpine terrain surrounding the volcanoes of the central plateau is home to some beautiful and sturdy plants able to survive the harsh climate and volcanic soil.

Upper Tama Lake

This shot of the Upper Tama Lake and the conical peak of Mount Ngauruhoe is one of the rewarding views at the turning point of the Tama Lakes Walk in the Tongariro National Park. The climb up the scree slope to this view can be quite challenging due to its steepness and exposure to the freezing wind. However, the 360-degree view from the ridgeline is definitely worth it.

Kareaara Stream Rapids

The Kareaara stream in the beautiful Tangoio Scenic Reserve creates some mesmerising cascades and rapids as it winds itself through native forest and moss-covered rocks. This is one of the first photos I took with the Canon EOS R5 and I was (and I still am!) so impressed with the dynamic range of the camera and the sharpness of the RF lens, it definitely motivated me to focus even more on photography.

Pekapeka Boardwalk Sunrise

This photo was taken in the early morning as the sun was just below the horizon. It was one of the first photos I took with the Canon EOS R5 and the RF24-105mm F4 IS USM lens. The magenta sky was creating beautiful reflections in the water and the light brown reeds took on the sky colour. I decided on a long exposure to create a smooth surface with a sheen of light on the water.

Pool at Bridal Veil Falls

Bridal Veil Falls is a plunge waterfall located along the Pakoka River in the Waikato area of New Zealand. The waterfall is 55 m high, and has over time caused the formation of a large pool at the base of the waterfall.

Bridal Veil Falls (top viewpoint)

The waterfall is the long-term result of a volcanic eruption that happened around 2 million years ago that spewed lava down a river valley, which then solidified over the older sandstone. This harder basalt then remained intact as water flowed over it and cut a deep pool in the softer sandstone underneath. The plunge from the top goes down 55 meters into a large 5-metre deep pool before it disappears into the thick bush.

Maraetotara Falls

The Maraetotara Falls is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the Hawke's Bay. It's an easy drive from the main centres and a short walk along a picturesque river. This waterfall is very popular among the locals in summer time with people jumping from the top of the falls into the water below.

City Hall, Delft

The Delft City Hall (Stadhuis Delft) is a beautiful Renaissance style building situated on the Market Square in Delft, Netherlands. The red shutters make the city hall very distinctive. This part of the building dates back to around 1618-1620, but the bell tower dates back even further. The bell tower is covered in Belgian limestone that makes it stand out from the other parts and gives it its blue colour in the early morning.
