I took this image just after the road to the summit of Te Mata Peak was re-opened after Cyclone Gabrielle lashed Hawke's Bay and caused major damage. That meant that cars could drive all the way to the top of the peak again. Not that I did, as I prefer to walk and find a nice place along the way to put up the tripod and enjoy the sunrise.

Morning fog flows around the limestone ridge of Te Mata Peak, curving past the summit in a slow current that mirrors the path of the Tukituki River in the valley below, as warm golden light catches the green and ochre hillside.
I arrived at Te Mata Peak that morning to find it completely gone. The fog was so thick that the summit, the ridge, and the valley below had all disappeared into the same white wall. I waited, and gradually the fog began to pull back, not evenly but in currents, finding its way around the limestone ridge the way the Tukituki River finds its way through the valley below. That parallel only struck me later, standing at the edge looking down at the fog doing exactly what the hidden river was doing beneath it.
