Landscape Photography Workshops
Experience Hawke’s Bay and Enhance your Photography
Throughout the year, I run personalised and small-group photography workshops in Hawke's Bay. Whatever stage you're at and whatever you're hoping to get out of a day in the field, there's a workshop built for it.
Choose Your Track
Camera Foundations For beginners who want to get off auto mode and build a solid grasp of camera settings and basic composition. Location is a backdrop for learning here — the point is understanding your gear.
Hawke's Bay Highlights For visiting or local photographers who want efficient, well-guided access to the region's best locations — shaped around whether you're drawn to mountains, coastline, wetlands, or atmosphere. Not sure what you're after yet? That's fine too — a Highlights session can double as an introduction to what the region has to offer.
Seeing the Landscape For photographers ready to move beyond technique toward a more personal, expressive way of composing — working with atmosphere, order, and narrative, the ideas that run through my own photography.
All tracks offer 1-on-1 and small-group learning tailored to your goals, camera gear, and schedule.
Location: Hawke’s Bay
Dates: Flexible, year round
Duration: Half Day (~4 hrs), Full Day (~8 hrs) and Full Day, Spread Over Multiple Days
Prices: $300 – $620 NZD per person
Not sure which fits? Camera Foundations suits anyone still finding their way around their camera; Highlights suits anyone who mainly wants great images from great locations (or simply wants to know what's worth photographing here); Seeing the Landscape suits anyone who wants to understand why an image works, or how a set of images can tell a story, not just capture one. Contact me if you'd like help deciding.
A Taste of What's Possible
Whichever track fits, you'll be working with Hawke's Bay's landscape at its best — from your first steps with a camera through to developing a personal, expressive way of seeing it.
What's Included
What's included varies by track and by what actually suits the session — this isn't a fixed package sitting on top of the workshop itself.
Every workshop starts with a conversation about what you're hoping to get out of it, and the session (and locations, where relevant) is shaped around your answer.
Every workshop also includes pickup and drop-off — usually from your accommodation or vehicle in or near Havelock North, and often from home directly if you're local to the area.
Follow-up material — such as guides from my website, or notes on organising your Lightroom library — is included where it's relevant to what we covered. This is most common on Camera Foundations and Seeing the Landscape, where there's usually a specific skill or idea to build on afterward. It's less common on Hawke's Bay Highlights, which is sometimes simply a guided tour with nothing further needed once the day's done.
Beyond the Field
Online Processing Tuition A 1-to-1 session (via Zoom or in person) for refining your editing, whether that's after a workshop or entirely on your own images.
12-Month 1-2-1 Mentoring One day a month with me, developing your photography — camera skills, composition, and post-processing — over a sustained period, for photographers ready to commit to real progress.
Words from Workshop Participants
“I’m fairly fluent in Photoshop and Lightroom, and I found Jos’s private session both educational, productive, and entertaining. I picked up several useful tips to incorporate into my workflow, along with a fresh perspective on how to approach my photos in post-processing. Thank you, Jos :)”
“I spent an excellent day with Jos, who helped me with some technical challenges I had been having with my camera as well as editing and set up tips and tricks in Lightroom. Jos also helped me identify different ways to look at scenes and prepare for any lighting situations. I have come away with many things to practice and challenges to try. I would highly recommend a day out with Jos, he has a huge amount of technical knowledge as well as an artistic eye, and Jos knows all the great spots to take you in Hawkes Bay for those knock out photos.”
