Peak Light Newsletter February 2025
Hi everyone, and welcome to this edition of the Peak Light newsletter.
Whether you’re here for the latest updates, photography insights, or captivating stories from Hawke’s Bay, I’m excited to share what’s new.
In this issue, I reflect on the impact of Cyclone Gabrielle two years on, dive into the pros and cons of using a circular polarising filter, and wrap up my first exhibition while looking ahead to what’s next.
Here’s what’s inside:
Remembering Cyclone Gabrielle – A look back at the storm that changed Hawke’s Bay and how it shaped my photography.
Circular Polarising Filter: What is it and does it make a difference? – An in-depth test of the Kase CPL III filter.
Exhibition: The Magic of Fog and Light in Hawke’s Bay – Highlights from my first exhibition and a special offer on framed prints.
Remembering Cyclone Gabrielle
On February 13 and 14 2023, Cyclone Gabrielle lashed Hawke's Bay with gale-force winds, a large easterly swell and record rainfall causing rivers to burst their banks, having a devastating impact on the region. Two years later, the devastation is still visible around us and the subsequent recovery is still underway. At the time, I wrote a visual story about finding beauty amidst the disaster that you can find here.
Circular Polarising Filter: What is it and does it make a difference?
I just finished a technical photography article about circular polarising filters, also known as CPL filters. If you want to find out what they are and whether they could be useful to you, have a read of this in-depth article where I put a Kase CPL III filter to the test.
Exhibition: The Magic of Fog and Light in Hawke’s Bay
My first exhibition wrapped up yesterday to make way for a new one in support of Napier’s Art Deco Weekend. The positive feedback I’ve received has been incredible, and I’m eager to hold another exhibition in the future.
All the images from the exhibition are available to view on my website, and there are still several prints for sale. Until the end of the month, you can get 30% off while stocks last!
Looking Ahead
I’m currently planning a long trip to the South Island to capture its breathtaking coastal and mountain landscapes in autumn. As part of the journey, I’ll be walking the Routeburn Track, immersing myself in the scenery and dedicating time to photography. Hopefully, I’ll return with some incredible images to share!
I’m also wrapping up articles on travelling and photographing Northland, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest of the USA. If all goes to plan, I’ll have more details for you in the next newsletter. Stay tuned.
