From Scenic to Expressive Landscape Photography

This month marks a milestone: my first feature article for Nature Vision Magazine (Issue 10, Fall 2025), published by the Nature Photographers Network. In it, I reflect on how my photography now lives between two creative worlds — the scenic and recognisable landscapes of Aotearoa, and the more expressive, interpretive work that leans into mood and personal vision. You can read the article, along with more about NPN, on my website.

October also took me to Taranaki for a series of workshops, where wildly changeable weather meant we photographed everything from sweeping seascapes and mountain vistas to intimate forest scenes. A freak wave at Tongapōrutu ended my shooting early by sending my camera for a swim, but insurance had me back on my feet within a week. I’ll be running more Taranaki workshops next year, and my Hawke’s Bay workshops run year-round. With Christmas approaching, I’ve also released a small collection of limited edition framed prints and canvases — beautifully presented, ready to hang, and 25% off until sold out.

The Light Moves On — From Cape Farewell to Taranaki

A look back at Fotofest 2025 and the diversity of photographic expression it showcased — from intimate stories to expansive landscapes. I’m also making room in the studio for new work, with a special offer on a selection of framed Hawke’s Bay prints.

This issue includes field notes from Cape Farewell, lessons from photographing in unfamiliar places, and a preview of my upcoming trip to Taranaki, where the cone-shaped mountain and its reflections at Lake Mangamahoe always seem to draw me back.

Fotofest Exhibition, Mastering Lightroom and some Fog

During a recent workshop, a student confessed their biggest struggle: simply organising photos in Lightroom. It made me smile — remembering when my biggest questions were about folders, not artistic identity. These days, the fog feels different: how to stay true to my creative voice while keeping my work relevant and sustainable.

In this issue, I explore how those two worlds connect — from practical steps like mastering Lightroom’s Tone Controls to creative reflections sparked by preparing for Fotofest Hawke’s Bay 2025. I also share a new pair of images captured in the quiet, golden fog of Te Mata Park.

Finding Tranquility and Enchantment at Lake Tūtira

A short escape to Lake Tūtira turned into a serene reminder of why patience often pays off in landscape photography. What began as a grey, rain-soaked evening unfolded into a fog-shrouded morning of quiet magic — where light, mist, and reflection transformed the familiar into something ethereal.

In this story, I share images and reflections from a 36-hour retreat to one of Hawke’s Bay’s most tranquil locations, and how embracing the unexpected conditions led to some of my favourite moments behind the camera.
